With more than 30 years of experience working with urban poor and marginalized sections, Sur Nirman had undertook a number of initiatives on own resources and on partnership with Government agencies and following are some of the important programmes that were/are being implemented by the organization.
Mahila Panchayat, another flagship progamme of Delhi Commission for Women is an extension of Women Self Groups introduced in the late nineties. Mahila Panchayats is a cluster level women’s forum formed by the women themselves to address their concerns like domestic violence, dowry, sexual abuse and other forms of violence against women and provide help and support to individual women to fight out through legal means and seeking police intervention.
Kishori Shakti Yojna, it is skill development and vocational training initiative started with assistance from Department of Women and Children trying to impart vocational training and awareness building activities aimed at adolescent girls and school dropouts. Sur Nirman has so far trained more than 120 girls under this project under 2 batches of 15-20 days capsule training programme.
Gender Resource Centre, a flagship programme of Government of NCT of Delhi which is a single window approach to awareness building, skill development and training to urban poor and also sensitizing women on their concerns vis-à-vis opportunities that are available outside their work and on how to tap them for their well being. A huge initiative in terms of advocacy and awareness building on maternal and community health, education, legal literacy, capacity building, etc.
Teach India: English Learning Programme in partnership with Times of India: English language skills is one of the most felt need of young children who usually comes out of government run schools where the English language skills are absent. As children seek employment in private companies with better skill sets in computer, accountancy, beauty culture, etc. the need for English language is very much wanting. Sensing this gap, Sur Nirman provides English teaching classes with a tie-up with Times of India, newspaper under its Teach India project and so far hundreds of children have come out with confidence of able to speak in English, if not thoroughly. It is a successful campaign and got a huge takers especially among the youth.
Night Shelters for the Homeless, providing protected shelter to the homeless and street urchins, women and children during extreme winter is the avowed aim of this initiative and our organization is providing this facility in Central and East Delhi districts for more than 2 years in a row. At present Sur Nirman runs 3 Shelter Homes (one for men and or 2 for women and children) In Jamma Masjid Area, Delhi.
Yuva Parivartan, another initiative promoted in association with a private trustee organization based in Mumbai to promote vocational education and training to youth with a special focus on adolescent and school/college going girls in computer education, English language skills, etc. Sur Nirman has successfully trained many batches of children under this programme.
Hunar Project, started under the aegis of National Open School of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, this initiative aims to provide informal education and vocational training trades and place them on par with formal educational streams.
